Synopsis
The director of this essay film delves into her grandfather’s harrowing past in his political participation in Thailand and Malaysia in the 1950s, in which he has been accused as a ‘Malayan Communist,’ jailed and expelled. A personal history searching journey in Malaysia and Thailand does not reveal an intimate family portrait but the insurmountable force that twisted the destiny of the vulnerable.
Director biography
Ching Wong is a London-based film and art curator, writer, and cultural practitioner. She is the Co-founder, Festival and Programming Director of the Hong Kong Film Festival UK since 2022 and recently contributed as a community curator to the Migration Museum’s exhibition Inside, Outside, and All In-Between (2024). Wong previously worked as a journalist and editor at newspapers and literary magazines in Hong Kong. She was the scriptwriter and actor in the dystopian anthology film Ten Years (2015), awarded Best Film at the 35th Hong Kong Film Awards. Wong holds an MA in Visual Anthropology from Goldsmiths, University of London.
