We are pleased to announce the second CIFA screening and research seminar entitled ‘The Dynamics of Chinese Immigrants in Europe’ on 20 March. The screening of Lady of the Harbour (dir. Sean Wang & Wang Yuguo, 2017) will be followed by an online Q&A session with the filmmaker Sean Wang. This documentary, nominated for several international film festivals, explores the life of Suzanne, a Chinese immigrant in Greece who offers support to refugees and engages with the themes of migration, displacement, and belonging. The seminar will be chaired by Paul Zhou, a PhD student based at the School of Arts and Cultures, whose practice-led research focuses on the dynamics of Chinese immigrants and transnational families in Belgium. CIFA seminars aim to promote the use of CIFA collections (e.g. over 750 documentaries and 160 interviews), facilitate dialogue and exchange among NU researchers and students and beyond, and help foster a vibrant interdisciplinary research culture. The seminars are organised by research students from the HaSS faculty, and open to all staff members and students. During each seminar, following the screening of a carefully selected film on CIFA’s large screen, a designated chair will facilitate a discussion related to the themes of the film as well as their own research topics. We extend our cordial invitation to everyone with an interest in Chinese history, society, politics and culture.
