We are pleased to announce the third CIFA screening and research seminar for this semester on 1st May 2 – 4.30 pm at Percy Building G.13, Newcastle University. Teaming up with Ambiguity Film (a screening organisation based in Edinburgh), we will be the third venue, after London and Edinburgh, to host the ‘TO LIVE·Xu Tong Film UK Exhibition Tour’. The film in focus is Shattered (2011), and we are delighted to have filmmaker Xu Tong join us for a post-screening online Q&A session. This documentary follows Old Tang, a normal elderly man living in Northeast China, as he recalls fragments of his personal life, serving as a microcosm of China’s past and present. CIFA seminars aim to promote the use of CIFA collections (e.g. over 750 documentaries and 160 interviews), facilitate dialogue and exchange among NU researchers and students and beyond, and help foster a vibrant interdisciplinary research culture. The seminars are organised by research students from the HaSS faculty, and open to all staff members and students. During each seminar, following the screening of a carefully selected film on CIFA’s large screen, a designated chair will facilitate a discussion related to the themes of the film as well as their own research topics. We extend our cordial invitation to everyone with an interest in Chinese history, society, politics and culture.
