CIFA is pleased to announce the Chinese Independent Cinema Retrospective, co-curated by CIFA and the INSTAR Film Festival, will be exhibited at the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich, Germany, from 1 to 3 November 2024. This showcase of seven Chinese independent films made between 2007 and 2023 is part of the 5th edition of the INSTAR Film Festival that will take place from 28 October to 3rd November in Barcelona, Berkeley, Madrid, Munich and Paris (see trailer). The INSTAR Film Festival is an annual event organized by the Hannah Arendt Institute of Artivism (INSTAR). It is a film showcase that supports international independent production, especially from countries where freedom of expression and creation are threatened. Two films included in the Chinese Independent Cinema Retrospective – An Asian Ghost Story(Bo Wang, 2023) and Republic (Jiang Jin, 2023) – have also been selected for this year’s competition.
In addition to the Retrospective, CIFA and INSTAR also co-hosted an online roundtable in which Cuban independent filmmakers José Luis Aparicio Ferrera and Luis Alejandro and Chinese independent filmmakers Feng Yan and Wang Tuo shared their experiences of making indie films in Cuba and China respectively, moderated by film scholars Dunja Fehimovic and Sabrina Qiong Yu at Newcastle University, UK.
